Abstract
Abstract
By calling attention to the editorial rationales that inform selected print editions and digital archives of Canadian literary texts and by positing alternatives modeled on Jerome McGann’s theories of social-textual editions and hypermedia archives and Donald Reiman’s theory of versioning, this essay presents ways in which the current transformation of Canadian literature’s print editions and manuscript collections into digital formats mark the transition of the scholarly edition to what McGann calls an “archive rather than an edition.” As an alternative to dominant editorial practices, the essay proposes a theoretical model for the production of new print and digital archives of editions.

En attirant l’attention sur les justifications rédactionnelles qui visent certaines éditions imprimées et archives numériques de textes littéraires canadiens et en suggérant des solutions de rechange s’inspirant des théories d’éditions sociales-textuelles et d’archives hypermédia de Jerome McGann ainsi que de la théorie du contrôle des versions de Donald Reiman, cet article présente des façons dont la transformation actuelle des éditions imprimées et des collections de manuscrits de la littérature canadienne en format numérique marque la transition de l’édition érudite en ce que M. McGann appelle « une archive plutôt qu’une édition ». L’article propose, à titre de solution de rechange aux pratiques rédactionnelles dominantes, un modèle théorique pour la production de nouvelles archives d’éditions imprimées et numériques.
